Hail! Hail! Jason-and-roll: Campy, creepy rock shows blast out Friday the 13th

Casket Snatch, Deirdre and others ready to make you howl

Tom M. Scanlon

May 13

HARK!

I hear…slasher music…

Sure, Friday the 13th an unlucky day.

But at night?

Get ready to party.

A few shows around the Valley give a wink to Jason Voorhees, the goalie-mask-wearing ghoul of the Friday the 13th movie franchise. He first terrorized a lake-side camp in 1980, taking down a hapless counselor played by then-unknown Kevin Bacon and a bunch of others.

Hail, Jason!

The Blooze Bar at 12014 N. 32nd St., Phoenix, has a show Jason would appreciate.

Indeed, it’s headlined by…”Keilie Voorhees.”

This Friday The 13th Costume Bash is also a Casket Snatch album release show (a follow-up to The Witching Hour of 2018).

Via Instagram chat, Alex Snatch, the leader of the creepy, industrial-rock band, gave the 411 on his new album:

“The album is called The Void, it will be available on most streaming platforms (Spotify, iTunes, etc) May 13th. We will have a limited edition USB box set available at the show. It's a skeleton USB in a wooden, hand painted coffin with a patch along with physical copies at the merch table.”

Casket Snatch, a veteran horror-punk/metal band hailing from light, bright Gilbert, reveals its simple, dark motto on its Instagram page:

"We make music and hail Satan."

And the HARK Valley Artist Bio of the Month award goes to…

"Casket Snatch is the shocking, disgusting, dangerous band Rock & Roll needs in these trying times. Formed in 2006, Casket Snatch has been through hell & back with its constant touring, gigging, Other events, & various member changes. The first E.P. entitled 7734 was released in 2007, & the follow-up Album, Sweet Death, was released in 2009. We are currently working on our second studio album, entitled Necrophiliacs Anonymous. (Note: Since this bio was written, the band released The Witching Hour and now the brand-new The Void.)

"We are a band focused on stage performance & true rock & roll in the vein of Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, & Murderdolls. Rock & Roll has lost its edge & is dying these days, We're here to bring it back."

For serious, industrial-goth-metal fans with a wickedly dark sense of humor only…

Makeup optional, but strongly encouraged for this one, a la the Casket Snatch “singer” and lead darkside traveler:

Starting at 8 p.m., the Blooze Bar blowout also features:

  • The Exxes

  • Arsenic Kitchen

  • Billy Virus

  • Vic Tims & The Kentucky Rifles.

Across town, another rock club is partyin’ on the 13th:

“Rockbar Scottsdale welcomes back the hard-rocking DIERDRE with special guests The Bellwethers.”

Intense singer Dierdre Evans leads the band, backed by James Kulon, Dwain Miller, Jimmy Caterine and Deej Asterikk.

Evans has a terrific voice, perhaps best evidenced on an acoustic cover of Alice in Chains’ Down in a Hole. And she does a stellar job on Soundgarden’s Fell on Black Days – injecting Sixties Soul into the grunge anthem.

According to her bio, “Rock & roll songstress Dierdre is a vocal powerhouse with a killer band. She captivates you with her unique, compelling vocals; strong, aggressive, haunting, and beautiful all at the same time. This high energy, original band’s sound, is soulful, alternative rock meets hard rock.”

Check out Dierdre’s latest, Bleed for Me, and more music here.
